Brazil’s ‘sin tax’

Brazil’s proposed consumption tax reforms under Complementary Bill of Law No. 68/2024 include a Selective Tax (widely referred to as the sin tax) for goods and services considered harmful to health or the environment. This is commanding a lot of attention and causing a lot of confusion. Sugary and alcoholic drinks are among the goods that would be subject to the tax, but it’s difficult to plan and prepare for this due to a lack of clarity. Companies that might be affected by the sin tax should proactively monitor for any new announcements.
